Tell someone specific to expect the thing by a specific time today. Set a visible 25-minute countdown and race it. Your ignition can't always tell real pressure from manufactured — use that.

Start ugly on purpose

Give yourself permission to do the terrible version first: the email with no greeting, the doc that's just bullet points. Pressure-sprinters stall at 'start it properly'. There is no properly. There's just started.

The 5-minute contract

Agree to five timed minutes, with quitting explicitly allowed after. Most of the resistance is at the door, not inside the room — five minutes gets you through the door.

Time Perception

Slice the distance into 'nows'

A three-week deadline is not-now and therefore nothing. 'Draft the outline by Friday, send it to Sam' is now-adjacent. Break distant deadlines into checkpoints a week or less apart — each with a witness.

Count backwards, out loud

From the deadline, walk backwards on paper: final version needs a draft by X, draft needs research by Y. Seeing the real start date — usually today, annoyingly — converts abstract distance into felt urgency early.
